SOME OF THE THINGS TO VISIT, SEE AND DO

LUDLOW CASTLE

Ludlow Castle is a ruined medieval fortification in the town of the same name in the English county of Shropshire, standing on a promontory overlooking the River Teme. The castle was probably founded by Walter de Lacy after the Norman conquest and was one of the first stone castles to be built in England.

LUDLOW MARKET

Ludlow Market has operated on the same site for over 900 years and continues to offer shoppers a fantastic choice of products from small and artisan producers and sellers. These range from fresh fruit and veg to locally produced game pies, wines and spirits produced on the Clee Hills, local fashion designers to handmade wooden furniture and oil paintings.

RIVER TEME

The beautiful River Teme flows eastwards from its source to the River Severn just south of Worcester. On its way it passes through just three towns: Knighton, Ludlow and Tenbury Wells. The river through Ludlow is very picturesque, tumbling over a series of weirs beneath the town on one side, and the steep-sided, tree-covered Whitcliffe on the other, overlooked by the ruined castle and tall church tower. This remote and exceptionally beautiful river valley is rich in wildlife, history and heritage.

WHITCLIFFE COMMON NATURE RESERVE

The town is blessed with this beautiful place just a stone’s throw from the castle. Steep wooded slopes rise from the banks of the River Teme, leading to open grassland with glorious views across Ludlow to the Clee Hills. Networked with footpaths and flights of stone steps, the Common is easy to explore, with numerous seats for walkers to rest and enjoy the views. Ludlow’s citizens and visitors alike have enjoyed its charms for hundreds of years. Its riverside promenade, the Bread Walk, was created in 1850, opening up the romantic scenery of rocky cliffs, lush ferns and a waterfall.

Ludlow and its surroundings offer many opportunities for fishing in beautiful, unspoilt countryside. The River Teme and its tributaries contain an abundance of fish species, including chub, barbel, roach, trout, grayling and pike. All waters are very wild and lightly fished, and there are also plenty of local still water pools and fisheries at which day tickets can be bought.
